MEDIA RELATIONS AND COUNTER-INSURGENCY OPERATIONS

Media Relations have always been an important part of waging war, but given today's asymmetric conflicts and ever increasing media dissemination capability, a media strategy is perhaps as important and relevant now as it has ever been. Yet there are multiple approaches to media operations. The US Army, within the context of COIN (FM3-24), is renewing efforts to emphasize the importance of media engagement in both Afghanistan and Iraq. While the Russian approach to media operations in Chechnya, and even Georgia (summer 2008), stands in contrast to the US military's efforts. While insurgents; Chechen, Iraqi, Afghan, and global, articulate and practice their own media strategy. As such, below is a sampling of an extensive database we continue to compile regarding this topic. We will from time to time update, remove and add resources--many in response to requests or inquiries regarding the topic .
