Leaving Al Asad: Anatomy of Withdrawal

A 20-30 minute piece for HDNet World Report on the withdrawal of 4-6 Infantry from Al Anbar's Al Asad Air Base just weeks ago. Dodge Billingsley and Scott Thornton were on hand for the closing of the base and the final convoy. For Billingsley the war in Iraq has come full circle, having convoyed in with India Company 3/7 Marines in 2003. The recent embed was the first into Iraq for Scott Thornton. Together Billingsley and Thornton shot over 30 hours of HD footage chronicling the base closure, continuing operations, the base hand over signing and the final convoy. Operation Anaconda: America's First Major Battle in Afghanistan View Video Clip

This film is currently wrapped and exists in two different versions. The first version has been renamed Operation Anaconda: America's First Major Battle in Afghanistan and is packaged in the book by the same name published by University of Kanas Press. The second version was adapted from the book version and retitled Shah-I Kot: Valley Redoubt. CFR is currently looking for broadcast distribution for the film.
