"Under the Big Pear Tree" 1982
woodcut, 18 1/2" x 18 5/8"
Depicting two women making shoes under a pear tree while surrounded
by animals and a child, the print symbolizes the relative prosperity
among peasants after the end of the Cultural Revolution. The notable
characteristic of this print is the influence of paper cut art style
of clear lines and lack of shadowing that reflects the influence
of Northern Shaanxi’s paper cut folk art that was revived
in the late 1970s.
