| FROM THE MASSES TO THE MASSES |
JIN
ZHILIN
(b. 1928) Beijing, China
"Evening along the banks of the Yalu River" 1961
oil on paper, glued to plywood by the artist, 9 5/8" x 16"
Jin was sent to Jilin Province in the wake of the Sino-Soviet split
in 1960 and painted this piece while working at the Jilin Art Academy.
At the time the government wanted to build a stronger cultural front
by teaching local artists in order to “build up their cultural
level” and develop better art for the ensuing propaganda war
with the Soviet Union. The industrial city in the foreground is notable
because the setting showcases industrial development in China on the
heals of the Great Leap Forward (1957-1958). |
