During the Cultural Revolution, intellectuals and party leaders
were sent to “May 7th Cadre Schools” to receive political
education, participate in manual labor, and undergo “reform
through labor.” Jin himself spent eight years in such a camp
before being sent back to Yan’an in 1973. The painting depicts
peasants, intellectuals, and party cadre working alongside each
other.
