"Ten Thousand Cadres go to the Countryside to Promote Dazhai"
1977
gouache on paper, 15 1/4" x 13"
This painting depicts the celebratory sendoff of Yan’an
cadres going to promote the Dazhai commune. Dazhai was the “model
commune” used to promote communal agriculture throughout China.
As a model commune for the entire nation, cadres from throughout
China had to “learn from Dazhai.” After 1978, with the
rise of Deng Xiaoping and the promotion of pragmatic policies, the
Dazhai model fell out of favor and privatization of agriculture
became official policy.
