Zauyuan is one of Mao’s Yan’an residences and now a location for Cadre training. The first four volumes of Mao’s collected works were published before the Cultural Revolution. The fifth volume was published during the Cultural Revolution. At the time it was required reading for all Party cadre. The painting includes a soldier, a peasant, a worker, and an intellectual youth, depicting the unity of the people.
