JIN ZHILIN (b. 1928) Beijing, China "Brigade Secretary of the Yugeng People’s Commune, Huailai County, Hebei Province" 1960 oil on cardboard, 15 1/8" x 12 1/2" Painted during the communalization of agriculture known as the Great Leap Forward (1958-1960). Jin spent a great deal of time in the countryside documenting this period. This piece demonstrates the influence of contemporary Soviet social realism on Chinese art before the Sino-Soviet split of 1960. Russian painter Constantine Maximov taught oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing from 1955 to 1957, where he and Jin were associates. |
