"Portrait Study Painting" 1975
oil on cardboard, 9 1/2" x 13 1/2"
The portrait appears to be of a local peasant, but could also be an
intellectual youth. It is also unclear if the piece was a study painting
for a major work as its title may indicate. The piece reflects a return
to a socialist realism style from the revolutionary romanticism that
characterized art during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), reflecting
an atmosphere of greater artistic freedom that emerged in the final
years of that tumultuous decade. |
