"Intellectual Youth from Beijing in Yan’an" 1975
oil on cardboard, 13 3/8"” x 17"”
After returning to Yan’an in 1973, Jin painted many intellectual
youth sent to the countryside to be “rusticated.”
Between the early 1960’s and the end of the Cultural Revolution,
millions of urban youth were “sent down” to the countryside
to learn from the peasants and to ideally change their worldview from
urban intellectualism to peasant and revolutionary. The model in this
painting also appears in Song Ruxin’s woodcut, Grandma’s
Heart, produced the same year. |
