JIN
ZHILIN
(b. 1928) Beijing, China
"Studying Mao’s Selected Works at a May 7th Cadre School"
1972
oil on paper on wood, 11 1/4" x 10"
Painted while at the You Qing Xiang May 7th Cadre School in Jilin
Province shortly before Jin was sent to Yan’an in 1973. The
warm colors and the women’s rosy cheeks are more typical of
socialist idealism or revolutionary romanticism mandated by Mao’s
wife Jiang Qing during the Cultural Revolution. However, the painting
illustrates that restrictions placed upon artists during the Cultural
Revolution were beginning to be relaxed and Jin was beginning to return
to a style he used earlier in his career—socialist realism. |
